Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)

·         ACLS or advanced cardiac life support is a series of responses that are carried out when an individual is having a heart attack or a heart condition.

·         The ACLS is based on proven research , clinical case studies and patient case studies .

·         The ACLS protocols are developed by the American heart association and the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation ILCOR guidelines. The ILCOR guidelines also laid foundation for CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and ECC (emergency cardiovascular care).

·         Proper ACLS requires proper assessment and timeliness. ACLS algorithms are based on 3 things:

·         Past performances

·         Life threatening cases

·         Best possible outcome

·         Individuals that know how to perform ACLS are also assumed to know how to perform BLS

Or basic life support .

Initial assessment if the person is unconscious (in distress, lying down or injured ):

·         Call out

·         Make sure the scene is safe

·         Conduct BLS and ACLS survey

If the person is unconscious: 1st conduct BLS survey and then ACLS survey

If the person is conscious, conduct an ACLS survey

·     Basic concepts in BLS : initiating chain of survival, high-quality chest compression, AED rescue breathing, team work, treating choking.

·         Initiating chain of survival in BLS increases chance of survival of cardiac arrest

For adults:

·         Activate emergency medical services

·         Perform CPR

·         Use AED (defibrillator to shock )

For children:

If the heart stops: perform high quality CPR
